Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship: Award Winners

2010 AWARDEE

BRÁULIO FONSECA CARNEIRO DE ALBUQUERQUE, a PhD student at the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE), has been selected as the 2010 Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship awardee. The Kidger Scholarship Award is expected to be presented to Bráulio by Tina Kidger at the International Optical Design Conference (IODC), June 13-17, 2010, The Snow King Resort, Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA.

2009 AWARDEE

DEWEN CHENG, a PhD candidate at the College of Optoelectronics, Beijing Institute of Technology was selected as the 2009 Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship awardee. Dewen’s thesis supervisor is Professor Yongtian Wang of the Beijing Institute of Technology. Dewen is currently conducting his research work at the College of Optical Sciences, University of Arizona under a joint education program, and Dr. Hong Hua of the University of Arizona is his co-supervisor. The was presented at SPIE’s Optics+Photonics conference, 2 – 6 August 2009, San Diego Convention Center, San Diego, California. The award consists of a $5,000 cash grant supported by the Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship Fund. Dewen is expected to be present to receive the award during the SPIE conference.

2008 AWARDEE

TOBIAS SCHMID, a PhD Candidate at CREOL - College of Optics & Photonics, University of Central Florida, was selected as the 2008 Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship awardee. Tobias' thesis supervisor is Jannick Rolland PhD, Professor of Optics and Computer Science, College of Optics & Photonics, CREOL, University of Central Florida. The award was presented at the SPIE Europe Optical Systems Design Symposium on 2 September 2008, Glasgow Caledonian University, Glasgow, Scotland, UK. The award consisting of a $5,000 cash grant, supported by the Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship Fund, was received for Tobias by his thesis supervisor, Professor Jannick Roland.

2007 AWARDEE

FLORIAN FOURNIER, a graduate research assistant at the College of Optics & Photonics, University of Central Florida, was selected as the 2007 Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship awardee. Florian's supervisor is Dr Jannick Rolland, Associate Professor of Optics, College of Optics & Photonics, CREOL. The award was presented at the UK Optical Design Meeting (UK ODM) on 19 September 2007 by Tina Kidger at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, Oxfordshire, UK. The award consists of a $5,000 cash grant supported by the Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship Fund.

2006 AWARDEE

BLAIR L. UNGER, a graduate student at the Institute of Optics, University of Rochester, was selected as the 2006 Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship awardee. Blair's doctoral advisor is Duncan Moore, Rudolph and Hilda Kingslake Professor of Optical Engineering. The award was presented at the International Optical Design Conference, Vancouver, British Columbia, Wednesday, 7 June by David M. Williamson, Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship Committee chair. The award was a $5,000 cash grant partially supported by QIOPTIQ Ltd, St Asaph, North Wales, U.K.

2005 AWARDEE

OZAN CAKMAKCI, a graduate research assistant at the College of Optics/CREOL, University of Central Florida, was selected as the 2005 Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship awardee. Ozan's Supervisor is Dr Jannick Rolland, Associate Professor of Optics, ECE & Computer Science, "Optical Diagnostics and Applications Laboratory." The award was presented by David Williamson, Chairman of the Kidger scholarship committee, at SPIE's Optics and Photonics 2005 Symposium, San Diego, California, on 3 August 2005. The award was a cash award partially supported by Thales Optics Ltd, St Asaph, North Wales, U.K.

2004 AWARDEE

ANDREW RAKICH, a Ph.D. student at University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, was selected as the 2004 Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship awardee. The award was presented by Tina Kidger at the Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation Symposium, Glasgow, Scotland, UK, on 22 June 2004. The award included a cash award, partially supported by Thales Optics Ltd, and a laptop computer plus peripherals donated by Hewlett-Packard Laboratories.

2003 AWARDEE

XUEMIN CHENG, a Ph.D. student at Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing, China, was selected as the 2003 Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship awardee. The award was presented by Tina Kidger at the Optical Systems Design conference, St. Etienne, France, on 30 September 2003. The award included a cash award, partially supported by Thales Optics Ltd, and a laptop computer plus peripherals donated by Hewlett-Packard Laboratories.

2002 AWARDEE

STUART IAN BARNES, a Ph.D. student at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, received the award for excellence in optical design. Stuart was presented the award on 4 June 2002 at the International Optical Design Conference (IODC) by Tina E. Kidger, Proprietor of Kidger Optics Associates and David Williamson, Chairman of the scholarship committee. The award included a cash award, partially supported by Thales Optics Ltd, and a laptop computer plus peripherals donated by Hewlett-Packard Laboratories.

2001 AWARDEE

CHUNYU ZHAO, a Ph.D. candidate at the Optical Sciences Center, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona, USA was selected as the 2001 Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship awardeee. Chunyu was selected by an international committee of academic and industrial specialists in optical design. His award was presented by Tina Kidger on 31 July 2001.

2000 AWARDEE

LIYING CHEN, a Ph.D. candidate at the Optical Sciences Center, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona, USA, winner of the 2000 award, was selected from a field of exceptional applicants as the first recipient of the Michael Kidger Memorial Scholarship.
